After a lot of stylists wondering if they should be starting a hair salon, I made a decision to write on this important subject so there won't be any misinterpretations. As with any decision to go into business for yourself there is quite a bit to think about before you make a commitment.
I hope to help make it plain as possible to make the important decisions that weigh on you constantly, obviously not knowing what to expect or if you can even attract any customers. If you are having a little apprehension I can relate to how you feel and it's healthy too, but please don't let your uneasiness hold you back from your objective of owning your own business, even in this economy.
And if you think that you'll just open the door and it happens ... you can forget it. Most likely, it'll be the absolute hardest gig you ever pulled, but don't let that stop you. There are many of you that are absolutely ready to start the journey but you've held back for a number of different reasons. And I'm not interested in trying to read your mind to understand what's going on but my desire today is to give you the nitty-gritty aspects that you have to have so you can succeed.
Nevertheless, most likely you haven't discovered all of them yet, but it's certainly not your fault ... because there are many in the industry that don't have it either and I'm not going to blow smoke up your skirt but they are at least making a go of it. But I know that won't satisfy you. I realize you're confident that you can do more and achieve quite a lot more than most run-of-the-mill salons ... and you will IF:
You pursue your trade with a passion: Most human beings, regardless of their jobs only function on a moderate level of accomplishment. Most don't struggle to achieve or succeed, they are complacent and mundane in their work ethics. Oh yea, they dream about success and most definitely about banking some big money, but they won't do what's necessary to make it happen. I'll tell you straight up – if you don't do more and prepare more than everyone else you'll blend in just exactly like everyone else; just another salon shop to try once and move on. Oh you may have some folks that will be with you for a while but you're not building a business, you've just bought yourself a job. Remember, those that perform do what the non-performers won't do and that means going the extra mile for your business.
You know how to give exceptional customer service: Your prospects will become customers and then clients when you start to serve them more effectively than other hair stylists do. I'm confident when I tell you that in almost any town in the world there's certainly plenty of salons that men and women can choose to get their hair cut. So what could possibly make the difference? Let me make sure you know exactly what it is: YOU! Only you can instill the difference to your future clients, so it's most definitely up to you to figure out how to deliver incredible customer service.
You have to know how to market yourself: This is what will make the difference for those that want to achieve, and only you can make can make it happen by doing what others won't. Everyone expects to spend a great amount of time learning about hair and all the other aspects of being a very good stylists. Wow, you must be very proud of what you've been able to accomplish in you trade so far, and you should be. But honing your skills in your trade won't bring in the money ... and I'm sure you know this already, no matter how good you are you have to know how to get people sitting in the chair in front of you. And so the one that develops a way to get people in that chair on a regular basis is the one that becomes the big dog and has the big paychecks to boot. There's not a simple 3 step method for marketing salons; it's a methodical effort of performing little tasks that will keep on bringing in customers regularly until you just can't put one more person on your schedule.
Is there any more material that you can get to help you learn more about this? Oh heck yea, plenty, you just have to look for it and then start to implement it into your business. One more very important thing left: do something everyday that will bring you some customers and that is when you begin to see the money.
